CMC Nurse Recognized with The DAISY Award

Christina Martinez, RN

A nurse at Cumberland Medical Center was honored with The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. The award is part of the DAISY Christina Martinez Receives DAISY AwardFoundation’s worldwide program to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day.

Christina Martinez, a registered nurse who works in the intensive care unit, was the first DAISY award recipient at Cumberland Medical Center.

“It was a tremendous honor to help present the DAISY Award to Christina,” says Rebecca Foster, chief nursing officer with Cumberland Medical Center. “She is the epitome of extraordinary care that we desire for each and every person to receive.”

In her entry, Martinez was applauded for her efforts in caring for a patient with significant intellectual and developmental disabilities and experienced a lengthy ICU stay.  The family nominated Martinez because they were extremely grateful that she took time to focus on the care their son received. She was relentless in her care to find solutions to help care for and comfort him.

Glenda Bond, the mother who nominated her, shared, “Christina is an exceptional nurse, full of compassion, always thinking outside the box, providing her own special touch that meant so very much to my son.”

Martinez was presented with a pin, a certificate, daisies, The Healer’s Touch sculpture, and a cinnamon roll. CMC appreciates her passion for nursing, and her commitment to always putting her patients first!

The DAISY Foundation was established in 1999 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick died at the age of 33, from complications of the auto-immune disease Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia Purpura (ITP). During his eight-week hospital stay, his family was impressed by the care and compassion his nurses provided, not only to him but to everyone in the family. They created the DAISY Award in Pat’s memory to recognize those nurses who make a big difference in the lives of so many people.

CMC collaborated with The DAISY Foundation to debut the award locally. There are currently more than 3,000 healthcare facilities worldwide that present DAISY Awards. CMC nurses may be nominated for the DAISY Award by patients, families, and colleagues. Nominations are blinded for review by a committee composed of internal and external CMC members.
