Cumberland Medical Center will host a MEDIC Regional Blood Center blood drive Thursday, September 28 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
MEDIC is Covenant Health’s sole blood bank provider. As a member of Covenant Health, MEDIC coordinates with Cumberland Medical Center to meet the blood bank needs of the Cumberland Plateau. Donations to MEDIC provide lifesaving blood products to 29 hospitals in 23 counties across East Tennessee and Southeast Kentucky. In order to meet the blood supply needs of area hospitals, MEDIC needs 275 blood products each and every day.
People who donate one pint of blood per year to MEDIC Regional Blood Center receive MEDIC’s blood coverage benefit. This benefit exempts donors and their IRS dependents from paying blood collection fees at any hospital in the U.S. if a transfusion is needed. However, this benefit does not include pre-existing illnesses or conditions. Each donation adds another year’s coverage to protect donors and their IRS dependents.
To be eligible to donate blood, donors must:
- be at least 18 years of age (or 16 to 17 with parental consent).
- be in good health.
- weigh at least 110 pounds.
- pass the physical and health history exam given before donation.
The blood drive at Cumberland Medical Center on Thursday, September 28 will be held in Conference Room A and B. Appointments are not necessary. Those who donate blood with MEDIC will receive a free ticket to Wonderworks in Pigeon Forge and a Medic t-shirt.
