CMC Earns Top 100 Rural & Community Hospital Award

Only Upper Cumberland hospital to receive honorTop 100

Cumberland Medical Center has been named the Upper Cumberland’s only Top 100 Rural & Community Hospital by iVantage Health Analytics and The Chartis Center for Rural Health, and is one of only two hospitals in Tennessee to earn the 2017 designation.

The recognition is based on a comparison of data from approximately 2,100 rural and community hospitals in the United States. Cumberland Medical Center earned a 93.9 on the iVantage Hospital Strength INDEX®, which means the medical center performs in the top ten percent of hospitals serving more rural areas nationwide.

“This designation is an affirmation of Cumberland Medical Center’s commitment to providing excellent care for our community,” said President and CAO David Bunch. “I am proud of our employees and physicians, and I appreciate their dedication to the patients and families we serve.

“We have been a member of Covenant Health for three years. Covenant Health has made a pledge of excellence in which all member organizations are committed to putting our patients first, and to excellence in everything we do. We are proud to be a part of a health system that emphasizes continual improvement, and the Top 100 Rural & Community Hospital recognition shows that our collaborative efforts have positive results in terms of hospital operations and better care for our patients.”

The INDEX® measures hospitals in areas including quality, medical outcomes, patient perspective, financial stability, costs and charges, and inpatient/outpatient rankings. Top 100 Rural & Community Hospitals play a key role in providing a safety net to communities across America, according to the Chartis Center for Rural Health.

“It’s more important than ever that rural hospitals proactively understand and address performance in the areas of cost, quality, outcomes and patient perspective. iVantage’s INDEX was designed to serve as the industry model,” said Michael Topchik, national leader of the Chartis Center. “Across the spectrum of performance indicators, there are rural providers that are writing the blueprint for success as they transition to value-based healthcare. Our analysis shows that this group of top performers exhibits a focused concern for their community needs.”

In addition to the Top 100 designation, Cumberland Medical Center recently completed its second year of receiving no readmission penalties from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. This national benchmark recognizes hospitals with effective collaborative practices that help recently hospitalized patients remain well and at home. The hospital has also recently earned an “A”  patient safety rating through Leap Frog.
