| CUMBERLAND MEDICAL CENTER EXPANDS REHABILITATION SERVICES
CROSSVILLE, TENN - Cumberland Medical Center is proud to announce an expansion of specialized services in rehabilitation with the opening of the new Cumberland Physical Rehabilitation Unit.
The rehab unit’s professional staff will strive to help patients recover quickly from illness, injury or surgery. Many patients regain a higher level of independence with rehabilitation after suffering serious conditions such as stroke, fractured hip, amputation and other neurological disorders. Rehabilitation can also help people build physical endurance and learn techniques for dealing with chronic conditions such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease and muscular dystrophy.
The new 12-bed rehab unit will be led by a specialty trained and experienced physician. His/her interdisciplinary team includes rehabilitation nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech pathologists, social workers and dietitians. Patients will continue to receive all the nursing care needed for recovery, and will immediately begin an intensive, individualized rehabilitation program.
“Having a physical rehabilitation unit at the hospital makes the transition easier for patients,” said Dr. Barry Wagner, President-elect. “A stroke or major surgery takes a lot out of a patient. With rehab they build their physical strength back up, and they may also learn new ways to do things because of changes in their physical abilities brought on by the condition. For example, a patient may have to re-teach their hand to pick up small objects, or learn new ways to get in and out of a bathtub.”
