VETERAN RECEIVES MEDALS AFTER 54 YEARS
Sapp was drafted into the military on April 6, 1953, while living in Crossville, TN. He was sent to Ft. Lewis, Washington for basic training and was attached to the 44th division of the Illinois National Guard. After boot camp, he was stationed at Ft. Lewis, Washington for anti-aircraft training for 16 weeks.

After graduation from his secondary school, he was sent to Inchon, Korea. There, he would serve in the Korean War for 16 months. Upon his return to the United States, Mr. Sapp was honorably discharged from active duty status after 3 days. He continued to live in the state of Washington until 2005. He returned to his hometown of Crossville in 2005.

He served in the United States Army until being discharged on April 4, 1955.

During his tour in the Korean War, Mr. Sapp served as a truck driver, 155 turret machine gunner, and guard duty for the Air Force base.



In November, 2008, Mr. Sapp met Mark Daniels, Veterans Service Officer for Cumberland County during the process of applying for VA health care. During the course of the interview, Mr. Daniels learned that the veteran had never received his military medals. He processed his applications through the proper channels. In April, 2009, Mr. Sapp received a package containing his medals: the Army Good Conduct Medal, Korean Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and the United Nations Korean Service Medal.


Mr. Leamon Sapp stated that he was pretty proud to have finally received them, even after 54 years. County Mayor Brock Hill made the presentation to Mr. Sapp along with standing behind from left to right Roger Van Rekom, Keith Comstock, Commander Don Eliason, Van Brooks, A family member of Mr. Sapp’s, Paul Whaley, and Mark Daniels.
