In order to continually improve
services for breast cancer patients, Cumberland Medical Center is proud to
introduce a new addition to breast health services at the hospital. This new
service is called the Nurse Navigator program, and will be fulfilled by a Registered
Nurse Case Manager.
The Nurse Navigator program is designed to help breast cancer
patients navigate the maze of options and frequent questions related to breast
cancer. This role is designed to complement the services provided by the physician.
The
Nurse Navigation Program provides education and emotional support for patients,
as well as their family members, serving as a liaison between the patient and
their treatment providers. With guidance and assistance from the Nurse Navigator,
patients can rely on the timely delivery of diagnostic, treatment, and follow-up
services, which are key components of successful recovery.
The Nurse Navigator’s role will be to:
- Facilitate communications between
patients and
healthcare providers
- Coordinate appointments with providers
for timely delivery of
diagnostic and
therapeutic services
- Provide educational resources to patients
and their families
- Serve as an educator while supporting the
patient and family in coping with
the
psychological aspects of breast
cancer
- Support the patient and family in
understanding and coping with the strong
emotions which accompany a cancer
diagnosis
- Refer patients to appropriate cancer
support programs and resources
