CUMBERLAND MEDICAL CENTER KEEPING YOU “IN THE KNOW”
Healthcare certainly is different from the care rendered twenty years ago! Today, patients are encouraged to participate in their health plan. All patients have a right to receive care as well as a right to understand and make informed decisions regarding that care.

At Cumberland Medical Center, we urge every patient to take steps to improve their healthcare needs. Recently, government organizations have initiated programs outlining steps YOU can take to maximize outcomes. Remember, your health is very important. Never fail to take measures to protect and improve your health status. Here are a few important tips you should note:

• Do not be embarrassed to tell your practitioner you do not understand something.
(Medical professionals become accustomed to speaking in a “medical shorthand.” A simple reminder to speak in everyday terms may be all they need.)

• Do not be afraid to tell your nurse or doctor:

o “I think you may have me confused with another patient”
o “I do not think this is the medicine I take”
o “It is not time for my medicine”
o “I do not think this was ordered for me.”

• When considering surgical intervention, remember to:
o Ask your doctor about special training that qualifies him or her for your procedure.
o Do not be embarrassed to ask your physician to “mark” the body part he/she will be operating on.
o Read all forms carefully and ask all questions before signing.

Here is a list of actions which is expected EVERY TIME you receive medical care while being hospitalized.

- ALL personnel check your wristband and ask for your name and birth date before EVERY PROCEDURE (medical imaging, laboratory, receiving transfusions, etc).

- Each patient has the right to friendly, educated caregivers 100% of the time.

- NOTICE IF YOUR CAREGIVER WASHED THEIR HANDS!

- Hand washing is the single most important act to prevent the spread of infection.

- Never be afraid to remind your nurse or doctor to do this…..It is for everyone!

In our next article, we will address more ways to enhance your healthcare experience. Cumberland Medical Center; committed to keeping you “in the know.”
