Prostate Cancer: What Every Man Should Know

The number of men diagnosed with prostate cancer this year would fill Neyland Stadium to maximum capacity…three times.

A prostate Screening Clinic for men age 45 and older will be held Saturday, September 8, 2007, 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon in the CMC Professional Office Building, 133 Hayes Street - Behind the Hospital.

Prostate cancer is a disease affecting one in every 11 men and is the second leading cause of cancer death among men largely because it goes undetected. With these factors in mind, and to promote the recommendations of the American Cancer Society.

PROSTATE CANCER:
The prostate is a small gland at the base of the male bladder. For unknown reasons, this gland will sometimes enlarge as men age. While this growth is often benign, it can become cancerous. However, when detected early, prostate cancer has a high cure rate.

WARNING SIGNS:
Sometimes difficulty in urination, frequent urination and blood in the urine will occur. More advanced symptoms include anemia, pain in the bones, weight loss and urinary obstruction.

ANNUAL CHECKS:
The American Cancer Society recommends that all men age 45 and older have a Prostate- Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test each year and a Digital Rectal Exam (DRE) as part of their annual checkup because early detection is the key.

This screening is sponsored by Cumberland Medical Center's Regional Cancer Center, Urology Department and CMC Physician Group. The screening is by APPOINTMENT ONLY and includes a PSA and DRE. A $15.00 fee covers the cost of the PSA. Results will be provided to each patient to allow for further review with his primary physician. Education materials will also be available to each participant for future reference.
