CMC'S PULMONARY REHABILITATION PROGRAM AVAILABLE
FOR YOU
COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) is the fourth leading
cause of death in America, claiming the lives of over 122,000 Americans.
It is the term used to describe the obstruction of airflow associated
primarily with emphysema and chronic bronchitis. When you have chronic
lung disease, routine daily activities such as: walking, climbing
steps, showering, or making the bed may cause shortness of breath.
For many people shortness of breath affects every aspect of their
lives. While COPD cannot be cured, it can be treated.
Most patients with pulmonary disease can maintain their usual level
of activities if appropriate health care measures are followed.
Cumberland Medical Center’s Pulmonary Rehabilitation program
provides supervised exercise training, respiratory care instruction,
emotional support, oxygen therapy, and education. Preventive and
rehabilitation benefits include improved breathing, increase in
strength and endurance, control of your symptoms, staying out of
the hospital, assistance with your medication and oxygen management.
Changes in diet, exercise and smoking habits can decrease the impact
of the disease and help return the patient to a higher level of
activity.
Pulmonary Rehabilitation requires a physician referral. Talk with
your doctor if you are interested in more information or contact
the Cardiac/Pulmonary Rehabilitation Department at Cumberland Medical
Center at 931-459-7379.
