LIVING WITH LUNG DISEASE
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a term used to
describe prolonged irreversible airflow obstruction that is mainly
associated with emphysema and chronic bronchitis. COPD is a leading
global health problem causing significant worldwide disability.
COPD is the 4th leading cause of death and unfortunately, its prevalence
continues to rise. Early on, it does not always produce symptoms
and causes only minimal disability in many patients.
Predisposing factors to COPD include:
- Cigarette smoking
- Recurrent or chronic respiratory infections
- Air pollution
- Allergies
Smoking is by far the biggest cause of COPD. Smoking increases
secretions and impairs their removal from the airways. The typical
COPD patient is a long-term smoker who has no symptoms until middle
age, when his or her ability to exercise or do strenuous work starts
to decline and a productive cough begins. Symptoms can be subtle
at first; these problems worsen as the patient ages and the disease
progresses. Eventually, it becomes difficult to breath even with
minimal exertion. Frequent respiratory infections, oxygen deficiency
in the blood, and abnormalities in pulmonary function are also
common findings.
Tests used to determine a diagnosis of COPD may include: chest
x-rays, pulmonary function tests, blood gas analysis, and EKG.
Treatment of COPD is directed at relieving symptoms and preventing
complications. Talking with your doctor about shortness of breath
is very important, along with participation in a pulmonary rehabilitation
program. These programs improve quality of life, strength, endurance
and a sense of well-being. Talk with your physician today.
If you would like more information about COPD, please plan to attend
an informative seminar provided by Cumberland County Cardiac/Pulmonary
Rehabilitation Alumni, Inc and Cumberland Medical Center. The seminar
will be held Tuesday, July 11, 2006, from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00
p.m. in the CMC Conference Center on the 2nd floor. Registration
will begin at 9:30 a.m. the day of the event. Pre-registration is
required and seating is limited to 150 people. A light lunch will
be served. Please call 459-7379 for more
information and to register for the event.
