Text Box: 2002 CMC NON-HODGKIN LYMPHOMA TREATMENT GRAPH
Text Box: By Howard J. Lewis, MD
Radiation Oncologist
Malignant Lymphomas comprise less than 5% of adult cancers but as a group encompass a very large variety of clinical presentations as they consist of more than 20 pathological subtypes and can arise in virtually any organ. Chemotherapy is the mainstay of treatment although occasionally radiation may be used as an adjunct to reduce overall recurrences and as sole treatment in very limited, favorable presentations. Recent important advances include the increasingly widespread use of monoclonal antibodies (Rituxin), and systemic radioimmunotherapeutic agents (Zevalin and Bexar).
Cumberland Medical Center’s survey of 2002 Non-Hodgkin lymphomas included both limited presentations (maltoma, follicular lymphoma), as well as half the patients having aggressive histologies (diffuse large cell). Almost all patients who receive chemotherapy do so in the private office setting, which would not be reflected in the cancer registry. Follow up data from 1998 indicates roughly 2/3 of patients are alive without disease, consistent with other reported outcomes for lymphoma treatment.

Text Box: Mortality in Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, CMC vs US

CMC: 1998 4-year observed survival rate: 60%*
            Median months of survival: 47.50
            Standard deviation: 26.70
            Average age at diagnosis: 66.60
            Median age at diagnosis: 68.00
Total number of patients observed: 10
US:      1992-1997 5-year relative survival rate: 53%**

*This study is not statistically significant because the number of patients observed is so small. Both analytic and non-analytic cases are included in the study.
