Text Box: 2002 CMC CANCER REGISTRY REPORT

Text Box: 2002 CANCER CONFERENCE SITES DISCUSSED GRAPH

Text Box:  The purpose of the Cumberland Medical Center Cancer Registry is to collect data on cancer diagnosis, treatment, history, stage, and progression or remission of the disease in CMC cancer patients. The data is then analyzed, abstracted, and reported to the TN Department of Health’s Central Cancer Registry, and to the National Cancer Data Bank, as required by state and federal laws. The data collected by the registry is also available for research purposes and statistical information.
CMC’s Cancer Registry accessioned 378 cancer cases for Y2002. Since the registry’s reference date, Jan. 1, 1998, there have been 1,820 cancer cases accessioned, which brings the total number accessioned at CMC to 4,004. Follow-up has been maintained on all patients entered in the registry since the reference date. Currently (9/22/03), the lost-to-follow-up rate is 7.44%, which is within the Commission on Cancer’s standard guidelines of <10%.
The Registry is responsible for scheduling and assisting in presenting monthly multidisciplinary cancer conferences, which bring physicians and ancillary hospital personnel who manage and care for cancer patients together for discussion about cancer, its discovery, evaluation, treatment and follow-up. These sessions are invaluable tools that promote better education and communication concerning cancer. Case presentations (see Cancer Conference graph) by the managing physicians reflect the variety and complexity of cancer diagnosis and treatment at CMC.
The Registry also produces the cancer program annual cancer report, in conjunction with the CMC Cancer Committee. This year, for the first time, the report is published on CMC’s website in order to expand the outreach of our cancer program to the world.
