Text Box: CHAIRMAN’S LETTER
Howard J. Lewis, M.D.
Radiation Oncology
During calendar year 2002, the Cancer Committee continued to evaluate and monitor cancer related activities at Cumberland Medical Center.  The physical plan of CMC Regional Cancer Center was to be renovated to include a meeting room for support groups, a reference library which is to include both books and computer resources, and a “wig closet” which will have wigs that will be donated by the American Cancer Society.  The Community Cancer Resource Center will be staffed by specially trained volunteers.
Educational efforts on behalf of the medical staff and hospital personnel continued with lectures directed at the nursing staff, monthly multidisciplinary cancer conferences, and cancer related presentations at monthly staff meetings.  Continuous quality improvements were documented with improvements in mammography scheduling, an increase in physician assistance in recording cancer-site specific staging, and the completion of a colorectal cancer survey.  Also, an ongoing study of Stage 1 & 2 breast cancer cases is continuing.
Cumberland Medical Center continued efforts for increased public awareness of cancer related diseases throughout the year.  Colorectal screening kits were handed out to hospital employees and a public awareness seminar was given, a prostate cancer screening was held in September, special rates were offered for screening mammograms during October, and CMC had seven teams to participate in the annual American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.  The grand total for the community fund raiser was $60,000 with CMC  raising over $18,000 for the event.
As chairman of the Cancer Committee, I look forward to the ongoing cooperative effort among the hospital staff, administration, the patients, their families, and the community in providing the best cancer care we can offer.
